The Truth About Fluoride - and Why Your Dentist Recommends It

Fluoride is one of the most discussed, and sometimes misunderstood,  topics in dentistry. You have probably heard debates about whether fluoride is “good” or “bad,” or perhaps you’ve wondered why your Dentist insists on fluoride toothpaste and treatments.

At tooth, we believe in empowering our patients with clear, evidence-based information. So, here’s the truth about fluoride, not the myths: what it does, why we use it, and what’s fact versus fiction.

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water, soil, and certain foods. Its power lies in its ability to strengthen tooth enamel (the hard, protective layer that shields your teeth from decay).

When fluoride interacts with the minerals in your enamel, it helps rebuild weakened areas and makes teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and sugars. This process is known as remineralisation.

Why Dentists Recommend Fluoride

Tooth decay is still one of the most common dental problems in the UK. Fluoride has been proven, through decades of research, to be one of the most effective ways to reduce cavities and improve oral health across all age groups.

At tooth, we may recommend fluoride for:

  • Children, whose developing enamel benefits most from early protection.

  • Adults, especially those prone to sensitivity or decay.

  • Patients with gum recession or dry mouth, where roots are more exposed and vulnerable to decay.

  • After professional cleanings, where topical fluoride treatments can help fortify teeth against bacteria and acids.

Common Myths About Fluoride and the Facts

  • Myth 1: “Fluoride is unsafe or toxic.”

    • Fact: In controlled, dental-approved amounts, fluoride is completely safe. The fluoride in toothpaste, mouthwash, or professional applications is carefully measured to strengthen enamel, not to harm it.

    • Problems only arise from extreme overexposure, which is virtually impossible through normal dental use.

  • Myth 2: “Natural toothpaste without fluoride is better.”

    • Fact: While “natural” doesn’t always mean “bad,” fluoride-free toothpastes simply don’t provide the same protection against decay. The enamel-strengthening action of fluoride is irreplaceable, no natural ingredient can replicate its proven effect. This is why all leading toothpastes have fluoride in them.

  • Myth 3: “Fluoride in water isn’t necessary.”

    • Fact: The reality is that although this is a widely debated topic, fluoridated water is probably one of the greatest public health achievements of the past century. Data shows that communities with optimally fluoridated water have significantly lower rates of cavities, especially in children, compared with in non-fluoridated areas.

Professional Fluoride Treatments at tooth in London

For patients with a higher risk of decay, we offer in-surgery fluoride varnishes. These are quick, painless, and more concentrated than what you’d find in over-the-counter products. We also can prescribe, when clinically necessary, high fluoride toothpaste, such as Duraphat 5000 and Duraphat 2800.

Our team often recommend fluoride treatments after dental hygiene appointments or as part of a long-term preventive plan, especially for patients with sensitive teeth, orthodontic appliances, or a history of decay.

Is Too Much Fluoride Possible?

Like any active ingredient, balance is key. The amount of fluoride in dental products and tap water in the UK is well below safety limits. Children should use only a pea-sized amount of age-suitable toothpaste and be supervised while brushing.

Whether it is me, or another of our other amazing Dentists at tooth, we can advise you on the right fluoride concentration for your needs, including whether you’d benefit from prescription-strength toothpaste or fluoride mouth rinse.
