periodontal treatments with our periodontist at tooth.

What is periodontal treatment (also known as periodontal disease or gum disease):

Periodontal treatment is to treat periodontitis - which is gum disease. Visible symptoms can include bleeding, sore or swollen gums. Once periodontal disease appears, it should be treated by a Periodontist as if not treated periodontitis can lead to serious oral issues such as periodontal abscess and tooth loss. There is non-surgical periodontal treatment, and in more severe cases, surgical periodontal treatment - at tooth in London SE1 we offer both types of periodontic treatments.

The treatment will start with a Periodontist Consultation where the Periodontist will assess your teeth, do detailed gum charting (known as 6 Point Pocket Charting/6PPC), take x rays as required, and diagnose each effected area. This will be followed by issuing a treatment plan which will normally consist of one or more appointments with the Periodontist for periodontic treatment.

Each session will normally last one hour. Following periodontic treatment(s) progress will be reviewed at a Periodontic Review. If the gum disease has been stabilised then you will be referred back to one of tooth’s experienced dental Hygienists for regular scaling/maintenance.

Top 5 reasons for seeing a Periodontist for periodontal treatment:

  1. If you have been referred to a periodontist by your dentist or hygienist

  2. If you have gum disease (periodontitis)

  3. If you have been seeing a dental hygienist for perio therapy/root surface debridement and your periodontitis is not stabilising

  4. If you have been informed by your dentist or hygienist that you have gum pockets of c5mm or above

  5. If you are having ongoing periodontal issues and your provider is unable to stabilise the issue.

What should I expect if I am having Periodontal Treatment at tooth in London?

If you’ve booked for a Periodontal appointment at tooth, you will start with a Periodontist Consultation.

You can expect to be taken through to the surgery by our experienced Periodontist who will collect you from reception. Our Periodontist is caring and gentle, with a wealth of qualifications, published research papers and experience in the field of Periodontics. Once in the dental chair, the Periodontist will ask some questions about your oral health routine and look in your mouth. They will do what is known as 6 Point Pocket Charting, and review your mouth and the periodontal issues, and take x rays as required.

You will be issued with a diagnosis and treatment plan for each tooth/gum area following the consultation. When attending for Periodontal treatment, the Periodontist will use local anaesthetic to numb affected areas as required, and use a combination of techniques to remove build up of plaque from deep under the gumline. Once all sessions have been completed, you will be booked for a Periodontal Review appointment where the Periodontist will review the progress in stabilising your periodontal disease, and advise next steps. This may include being referred back to one of tooth’s experienced dental hygienists for what is known as maintenance or perio therapy - regular visits, based on your individual needs, for deep cleaning and/or scaling.
