bone grafting and sinus lifts in London.
What is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting is a specialised dental procedure used to rebuild and restore lost or deficient jawbone. Many patients who lose bone following tooth extraction, gum disease, or long periods without a tooth find that there’s not enough quality bone left to support a dental implant or maintain facial structure.
At tooth, our bone grafting services provide the strong, healthy foundation your smile deserves.
Why Bone Grafting May Be Necessary
There are many reason you may need a bone graft or a sinus lift and at tooth our experienced team will put you in safe hands. Reasons may include:
You’ve lost bone volume after a tooth extraction
Periodontal disease (gum disease) has eroded bone support
You’ve had long-term tooth loss and the jawbone has shrunk (resorption)
Your jaw’s bone height or width is insufficient to safely accept a dental implant
You need a vertical bone graft (to rebuild height)
You require a sinus lift (to add bone beneath the sinus in the upper jaw)
Without sufficient bone, implants may lack stability, and your facial profile can also be compromised.
Types of Bone Grafting AND SINUS LIFTS
At tooth in Waterloo, SE1 we perform several bone grafting approaches, depending on your needs:
Standard Bone Graft: This is used when moderate bone loss has occurred. Graft material is placed in the deficient site and covered with a membrane to encourage bone growth and integration.
Vertical Bone Graft: When the bone has lost height, a vertical graft rebuilds upward. This is more technically demanding and done with careful planning to ensure longer lasting and more predictable outcomes.
Sinus Lift (Internal and External): In the upper jaw, especially in the molar area, the maxillary sinus may sit too close to the jawbone floor:
Internal (crestal) sinus lift: for modest bone height increases, the sinus membrane is gently lifted from the implant site itself, and grafting material is placed beneath.
External (lateral) sinus lift: for more extensive bone augmentation, a lateral access window is created in the sinus wall to lift the membrane and place graft material.
These techniques help create enough vertical bone height in the posterior upper jaw so that implants can be safely and durably placed.

What to Expect — The Bone Grafting Process
Consultation and Digital Imaging: As with all treatments at tooth, your first step is a Consultation. We’ll take CBCT scans and 3D images to evaluate your bone volume and plan your graft precisely.
Preparation and Planning: Following your Consultation, we’ll determine the most appropriate grafting technique (standard, vertical, or sinus lift) and choose the ideal graft material (autograft, allograft, or synthetic) according to your specific situation and case needs.
Procedure: During the procedure, you will be numbed using local anaesthetic. Your Oral Surgeon will first expose the bone, place the graft, stabilise it (often with a membrane and fixation), and then carefully close the site.
Healing and Integration: Integration of the bone will take some time and we never rush treatments after a bone graft. Over several months (typically 4–9 months depending on the site and treatment), your body regenerates new bone that integrates with the graft.
Implant Placement or Finishing Stage: Once integration is adequate, if applicable, we’ll place your implant(s) or move to the next phase of restoration.

Does having a Bone Graft or a SINUS LIFT Hurt?
Bone Grafting is a special procedure and only suitably qualified and experienced Dentists should do this treatment, but that doesn’t mean it is massively painful, so if you are considering bone grafting or a sinus lift as part of a wider treatment plan, please do not worry. At tooth, our oral surgeons are very experienced in this area and take every measure to make all of your treatments comfortable. We do this by use of Local Anaesthetic (LA), the most gentle surgical techniques possible, strict post-op pain management protocols and follow-up monitoring to ensure optimal healing. It would be normal for a patient to experience mild to moderate discomfort for a few days, which is well managed with prescribed medications and aftercare as needed.
How Much Does Bone Grafting Cost?
The cost of a bone graft or sinus lift depends on a few factors. These include the size and complexity of the graft, the type of bone graft (standard or vertical) or type of sinus lift (internal or external) and whether there will be additional surgical steps needed for access or membrane support. Most cases will fall into the pricing below, but these prices may vary sometimes linked to the above.
Bone Graft (Standard) - £795
Vertical Bone Graft - £1500
Sinus Lift (Internal) - £695
Sinus Lift (External) - £1250
Once we evaluate your case and review imaging, as always at tooth, we’ll provide a detailed quote, so there will be no hidden costs or surprises along the way.
