I recently posted a blog on everything you need to know about Endodontics, which proved very popular! So now, as a follow up, here’s a blog about what to do, and what to expect, if you’ve just had a root canal treatment or are preparing for one. Many patients can get a little anxious wondering what happens next, so I hope this helps!
Root canal treatment is a highly effective way to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed. But what should you expect after the procedure?
In this blog, I’ll talk you through the healing process, common post-treatment symptoms, and when to get in touch with us or your dental team. Whether you’ve had treatment with tooth dental care in London, your own dental clinic or have been referred to us, this guide will help you recover safely and with confidence.
Typical process for root canal treatment
Recovery after a Root Canal Treatment…
Most patients can return to normal activities the same day. However, it’s best to take it easy for the first 24 hours or so.
Here are some of the typical minor symptoms you might experience after endodontic treatment:
Mild discomfort or tenderness around the treated area
Sensitivity to pressure when biting or chewing
Slight swelling in the surrounding gum tissue
Numbness for a few hours after treatment (from local anaesthetic)
These symptoms are completely normal and should gradually improve over the following few days, so these in isolation and normally nothing to worry about at all.
How to manage discomfort after Root Canal Treatment…
Any post-treatment soreness is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (always follow the dosage instructions and/or your Dentist’s advice and check against your own allergies).
Here’s some tips to help your recovery after root canal treatment:
Avoid chewing on the treated tooth and surrounding area, until your dentist has placed a permanent filling or crown
Stick to soft foods for the first 24–48 hours
Maintain good oral hygiene, but be sure to brush gently around the treated area
Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, which can delay healing and both are generally bad for your oral health.
Will I need a crown or filling after Root Canal Treatment?
This is a common question and the answer is yes! In many cases, your tooth will need further restoration after the root canal is complete. This is to protect it as after a root canal/endodontic treatment the tooth structure is compromised and it therefore is a bit weaker.
To protect a tooth after Root Canal Treatment, you may need a permanent filling to seal the tooth or a dental crown to protect and strengthen the tooth (for the crown, this is especially the case for back teeth).
Your Dentist will advise you on the best option, either before or at the time of your treatment.
Remember, it is so important to follow-up and to get this done and it’s important not to delay this final stage, as the longer the tooth remains unprotected, the greater the risk of fracture or reinfection.
How long will it take to heal after a Root Canal Treatment?
Don’t worry, after Endodontic treatment (Root Canal Treatment), most patients recover fully within a few days to a week, though some mild sensitivity may last for up to two weeks. This is typically due to inflammation in the tissues surrounding the tooth and will resolve on its own.
When to contact your Endodontist or Dentist after Root Canal Treatment…
Whilst complications after Root Canal Treatments are normally rare, you should contact us at tooth dental practice in Waterloo, London if you experience:
Severe pain that worsens after a few days
Significant swelling that does not go down
An allergic reaction to medication
A loose or broken temporary filling
Any signs of infection (fever, bad taste in mouth)
Getting any of these issues looked at quickly will ensure that if you do have any issues, that they are quickly resolved and your recovery follows its natural plan.
Aftercare Matters
Root Canal Treatment or Endodontic treatment has a high success rate, and with the right care, your restored tooth can even last a lifetime.
But maintenance is important too! Attending all follow-up appointments, completing the final restoration (crown or permanent filling), attending regular check ups and dental hygiene appointments, and generally maintaining good oral hygiene are key to long-term success.
