  • Whether you need to see a Dentist or a Dental Hygienist really depends on what you need.

A Dentist is to check your teeth and whole mouth – for example for cavities/decay, if you have dental pain, sore gums etc, if you need a dental crown or dental bridge, Invisalign, dental night guard, fillings etc.

A Dental Hygienist is there to ‘scale and polish’ your teeth to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth surfaces and around the gumline.

You should see a Dental Hygienist every six months (unless recommended differently by your Hygienist) and you should see a Dentist every six months (unless advised otherwise by your Dentist).

You should see both a Dentist and a Hygienist in London. Both are integral to maintaining good oral health, and in Dentistry prevention is much better (and much cheaper!) than cure.

At tooth in London, Waterloo SE1, we have an amazing team of Dentists, Dental Specialists and Dental Hygienists ready to help you maintain a great oral health routine.

To book just WhatsApp us or contact us here.

  • When you attend a Dental Hygiene appointment at tooth, you will start by being asked to complete or update your medical history form and if you are only seeing the Hygienist then another short form to read and sign. Once your appointment time arrives, your Dental Hygienist will collect you from the Waiting Room area and take you through to the dental surgery.

The appointment will start with the Dental Hygienist asking you about your general oral health habits and routine, and if you are having any issues with your mouth, gums or teeth.

Following this your Dental Hygiene treatment will begin and the Dental Hygienist will use a variety of instruments to give your teeth a lovely clean, scale and polish. The instruments used can include a USS (an ultrasonic scaler), a small instrument called a hand-scaler, and a polishing brush.

Our Standard Plus Dental Hygiene and tooth Deluxe Dental Hygiene also include use of our special air-flow machine for a deeper clean.

At the end of the clean, the Dental Hygienist will polish your teeth using a flavoured polishing paste. Once you have rinsed your mouth, the Dental Hygienist will use a mirror to let you see the results of the Hygiene appointment.

They will advise re best ways to maintain a health mouth, and demonstrate the correct use of at home cleaning instruments like TePes or floss.

You’ll then go to Reception and speak to one of our lovely Receptionist team to pay and book any future appointments that you may wish to book.

  • tooth dental care in Waterloo is a fully private dentist. What this means is that we do not have a contract with the NHS to provide NHS Dental Treatments, so all treatments are chargeable.

However, many people are confused about how NHS dental services work, assuming everything is free or discounted, but many things that patients need are done privately anyway, often at costs far greater than we charge at tooth. There is no such thing really as an NHS dental surgery – they are known as Mixed practices.

Anything cosmetic or non-essential, for example a white filling (on non-anterior teeth), chip repairs, dental hygiene, and much more is fully chargeable under NHS dentistry as a private treatment. So, by selecting a private surgery you will benefit from an easy to book dentists, easy to contact and less rushed service using the best materials and equipment. And no waiting lists too!

At tooth on Lower Marsh, our New Patient Dental Exam is only £45 and our Dental Hygiene is only £80 for our Standard Shine Hygiene.

  • If you think you may be grinding your teeth (also known as bruxism), or clenching, then you should book for an exam to see one of our Dentists.

Teeth grinding is a common issue for many patients and it is important that it isn’t ignored as it can cause a lot of permanent damage to your teeth.

If tooth grinding is ignored then it can lead to fractures of the tooth, tooth wear, damage to enamel, tooth chips or breakages. Additionally it can cause pain in the jaw or jaw-stiffness, headaches, recession of the gums and ultimately other things that will cost a lot to repair.

There are many ways to prevent tooth grinding, and the most common is by wearing a night-guard. We also do injectables for bruxism to relax the muscles. Your Dentist will be able to advise the best treatments for you at your visit.
