As soon as anyone mentions smile alignment, fixed braces, Invisalign, Spark or anything to do with straightening teeth, everyone immediately assumes that it is just for cosmetic reasons. But, the reality is that straight teeth offer far more than just a great smile.

Five reasons why smile alignment treatments offer more than just straight teeth:
It is much easier to keep straight teeth clean. If teeth are crowded, crooked or overlapping, it is hard to keep them clean. Teeth like this often create hard to clean areas, and are prone to trapping food. Difficulty in cleaning and trapped food can lead to bad oral health - as these issues can be a magnet for plaque, tartar and decay!
Wear and tear is something everyone has to deal with when it comes to their teeth. But crooked teeth can be much more prone to wear. Reasons for this can include the way that your bite aligns - meaning that your teeth are more likely to rub together or hit each other when you eat and in daily use.
Many people chose smile alignment like Invisalign to move a tooth or teeth that are protruding (sticking out). Protruding teeth have a higher risk of damage in many instances as they can be more easy to hit or chip as they can lack the ‘protection’ of the other teeth around them.
Similar to my first point above, crowded or mis-aligned teeth can lead to bad oral health in general - including gum health. Gum disease can be painful as gums feel swollen or sore and can bleed. Things like food trapping and plaque/tartar build up can cause gum issues and in more severe cases can lead to periodontitis (gum disease) - which in turn can lead to tooth loss!
It’s sometimes tempting to just stick to what you know and in the case of tooth alignment this could mean just accepting crowded teeth or misalignment of your teeth and/or bite. But although smile alignment like Invisalign does come with a cost, the reality is that it’s a once off expense that doesn’t take very long and the benefits can be for life if maintained. Unfortunately in any aspect of dentistry, when it comes to teeth they never self remedy! Decay won’t fix itself and crooked or crowded teeth won’t either. As we get older there’s a gradual movement of your teeth, so crowding gets worse and therefore the risk of all the above gets worse too!
