why it should be everyone’s resolution to have healthy teeth in 2024!

Firstly, happy new year to all our dental and dental hygiene patients, past, present and future.

Obviously at this time of year many of us are making resolutions which normally include things like work less, eat better, sleep more and get fitter! One thing they rarely include though, is going to the dentist or dental hygienist more regularly! But the truth is, they should … and here’s why:

One thing dental patients often ask me when an issue is identified at a dental check up or a new patient dental exam at our dental practices in Waterloo is ‘can I leave it?’

The answer to that is usually the same: yes it is entirely up to you, but one thing is for certain, your teeth will never heal themselves, the longer you leave a dental issue the more likely it is to get worse, and the worse it gets the more severe the treatment will need to be and likely will cost more. So waiting is 99% of the time very much a bad idea.

Dental cavities and decay (usually treated with dental fillings) can get worse. So what starts as an issue that needs a small filling, can grow into an issue that needs a medium or large filling. Or it can grow into something that requires far more invasive root canal (endodontic) treatment, or the loss of the tooth via a tooth extraction - which leaves you not only with a gap, but a bigger gap in your wallet or purse if you want to fill it with, for example, a dental crown or a dental implant!

Prevention is better than cure’ is a phrase that most of us know and use. And in dentistry, it’s so very true. So many of the dental treatments we offer at tooth in Waterloo could have been avoided with the combination of ongoing good dental care at home, regular check ups and dental hygiene appointments (to identify issues at the earliest possible stages and to remove damaging and unsightly plaque and tartar) and naturally a diet that isn’t too sugar heavy.

So if you’re looking for something to add to your new year resolution list, something that’s affordable and achievable and actually good for you too, then please take my advice - and add regular visits to the dentist and dental hygienist!
